Trance Art

So, it's been awhile since I displayed any new art from my pal Luna aka Penny Olcott.
She is a font of inspiration, nefarious inflamed translation, somnambulant investigation and all kinds of fun!  Here, some new works:

The Testosterone Files -- "WOW and WHOA!" in review

And -- here is another new and wonderful review of The Testosterone Files I recently discovered.

Gender Outlaw Reviews The Testosterone Files

I did attempt to make my experience vivid and absolutely real to my readers. I wanted to immerse them in the sensations and feelings and conflicts I was traversing and experiencing, even if this made them uncomfortable. Here, a wonderful quote:

The fact that The Testosterone Files elicited such an emotional response from me is testament to Valerio’s exquisite writing. I doubt very much that Valerio is a red-blooded, fist pumping, walking expression of pure machismo. In the end, this is one man’s experience and while it sheds light on a typically unlit path of discovery, we all walk that road in our own way. My fear has since dissipated, but I am left with the magnitude of my own looming decision. Wow and whoa! This was an extremely important read for me and I am grateful for Valerio’s wit, intelligence, bravery and honesty. Do yourself a favor guys and read this book!

And again, I quote from the review:

“WOW and WHOA!”

This pretty much sums up how I felt as I read through this wonderfully written account of Valerio’s transition from female to male. Valerio is a fantastic writer! The scenes in this book jump off the page and transport you right into his thoughts and memories. I had a really hard time putting it down. I was also unable to hold back audible laughter at the humorous moments he describes, and I read about an 1/8 of the book out loud to my GF–she just HAD to hear this stuff!

I want to thank Gender Outlaw for his wonderful review! Possibly, I can make it up to his neck of the woods in British Columbia before too long. I will wait till winter is over however!

The Testosterone Files Reviewed again

I still find these reviews of the memoir, and this one is quite interesting. I like the quotes from the text that Katherine Niemczyk extracts. And, I like the writer's open and respectful attitude to my experience.

The Impulse - reflections on The Testosterone Files by Katherine Niemczyk

Always, I wish to thank the reviewer! Thanks Katherine!

Hillary Clinton is the Democrat to beat McCain

I am getting a kick out of calling for Hillary Clinton and talking to little old ladies in their 80's or even, 90's, (one was 94) who are voting for her and sound so enthused. It must be exciting for them to vote for a woman who may actually become the first woman president, and amazing to them that this is happening, in their lifetime!

One of my main concerns is that Obama is not electable against the Republican candidate, who is likely to be McCain. Of course, this is not my only reason for voting for Hillary Clinton, but it is certainly an important one.

I offer this emerging information about Obama that indicates there are still things many of us don't know, or are unaware of. And, let me add, that although his campaign has complained about treatment by the Clintons, this is nothing compared to what he will be up against if he becomes the nominee. The Republicans play hardball.

Hillary is the Democrat to beat McCain

Ok, I admit, I am also very excited to see a woman finally within striking distance of the Oval Office in the White House, but I am voting for her because I think she can get the job done, and has a record of doing good work in the New York Senate, and while she was First Lady. As First Lady her attempt at fixing health care then was brave, and although it failed, I think it proved she has vision and courage. She planted the idea on the national agenda, and worked internationally for the benefit of women:

A primary effort they shared was globally advocating gender equity in economics, employment, health care and education. During her trips to Africa (1997), Asia (1995), South America (1995, 1997) and the Central European former Soviet satellite nations (1997, 1998), Hillary Clinton emphasized "a civil society," of human rights as a road to democracy and capitalism. The First Lady was also one of the few international figures at the time who spoke out against the treatment of Afghani women by Islamist fundamentalist Taliban that had seized control of Afghanistan. One of the programs she helped create was Vital Voices, a U.S.-sponsored initiative to promote the participation of international women in their nation's political process. One result of the group's meetings, in Northern Ireland, was drawing together women leaders of various political factions that supported the Good Friday peace agreement that brought peace to that nation long at civil war. Hillary Clinton was also an active supporter of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), often awarding its micro-loans to small enterprises begun by women in developing nations that aided the economic growth in their impoverished communities. Certainly one of her more important speeches as First Lady addressing the need for equal rights for women was international in scope and created controversy in the nation where it was made: the September 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.

This from:
Hillary Clinton as First Lady

I encourage everyone to check her site out, and the Town Hall Meeting tonight as well where she will answer questions:

Town Hall Meeting and Hillary Clinton's site

Her site goes into more detail about her positions and accomplishments, which are impressive.

And, yes, she is the * only * candidate now who has a comprehensive health care plan that will cover everyone, and includes mental health and -- no exclusions for pre-existing conditions!

In any event, watching the results will be exciting and pretty damn intense.

Clip from Transforming Community 2005

So, I discovered this clip today from the Queer Arts Festival Transforming Community reading. I was on a panel with a number of other writers, performers, and activists and we all had written pieces especially for the show. Transforming Community was originated and curated first by Michelle Tea and has been continued each year since then. This short clip is from the first in 2005. Here I am reading from my piece, Forbidden: Notes from the Love Affair of a Trans Man and a Femme Dyke:

It is just a tiny clip, at the end of the piece, so it is hard to know what the hell I'm talking about. The other clips from that night are here:

Just gliding by into a photo orgy

I've been busy lately organizing, trying to get to new writing, and doing some sales consulting.  I've been working a bit with my old pals at ATC, Athanor Trance Control, and attempting to get moving in a positive direction again with our projects: art, music, writing and websites.  I bought a new MacBook and of course, I've taken a photo or two.

To all who Comment

I just want to let everyone who has left kind and wonderful comments, and thoughtful comments, about my memoir that I have read them and appreciate them so much!

I am having a hard time getting back to some people, so make sure you leave an email address for me.  I think part of it is that I need to get to know my way better around this blog, and I will be working on doing so.  As someone who is now consulting, instead of working a 40 hour week, I certainly have more time to discover and thank people who appreciate or comment on my work.

So, I will get back to you!  Really and truly. And, again thank you so MUCH for commenting and stopping by.   I am getting myself more organized but will certainly respond if I can locate your email.

Best Regards,

Max

I'll be reading at the K'vetsh 11th Anniversary Show on Sunday

Yea, I'll be here folks on Sunday along with many other local luminaries!

K'vetsh open mic is having an 11th anniversary show.

Kirk Read says:  You should come. You might meet somebody, fool around a few times, move in, obsessively plan your future together, pick out baby names in your head, then start arguing about geopolitics and exclaim during the course of an evening: "I hope I never see you again / can we go to the beach one more time / I hate you / kiss me / you need a 30 day treatment program / I'll die without you / I never even really liked you anyway."
And that's when you know it'll be time to return to K'vetsh. Keep coming back. It works if you work it. Every month, first Sunday. 9pm at Sadie's Flying Elephant (a beverage-serving establishment at the corner of Potrero and Mariposa) at 9pm.

This month, a whirlwind of features, no open mic...
We celebrate the preternaturally talented:
